Hoping to replicate the gold they struck in The Jungle Book earlier this year, Jon Favreau and Disney are partnering up to do a live-action remake of The Lion King, as Mr Favreau announced via Twitter this morning.
Disney seems intent on making their way through their animated canon in this style. Tim Burton is signed on to redo Dumbo, Emma Stone is starring in Cruella, a spinoff of 101 Dalmatians, and Peter Pan, Mulan, and Pinocchio are also in the works.
While there is no firm release date set for the new Lion King, it seems unlikely that we will see anything earlier than 2020. Mary Poppins Returns, starring Emily Blunt and Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, was announced this past May, and it isn’t due out until Christmas 2018.
