Laura Ricciardi, one of the filmmakers behind the hit documentary series Making a Murderer, defended her work in front of the Television Critics Association this Sunday.
In part, Ms Ricciardi said, “[W]e’re documentary filmmakers. … We’re not prosecutors. We’re not defense attorneys. We do not set out to convict or exonerate anyone. … It would have been impossible for us to include every piece of evidence submitted to the court. … Of course we left out evidence. There would have been no other way of doing it. We were not putting on a trial but a film. Of what was omitted, the question is: was it really significant? The answer is no.â€
Since Making a Murderer was released in mid-December 2015, it has attracted widespread attention, including an official White House response to a petition that asked President Obama to “[p]ardon Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey for their alleged involvement in the murder of Teresa Halbach.â€
