September 8, 1966. That's fifty years in the past today, which means that it's been fifty years since Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, and the rest of the crew of the USS Enterprise set out on their five-year mission. Since then, the Trek universe has come to encompass six series, with one more in the oven, plus thirteen films, a bunch of comic books, and a bunch of novels, among other things.
Although the most recent film, Star Trek: Beyond, did not perform as well as Paramount Pictures would have liked, CBS has already set a course for the latest serial iteration, Star Trek: Discovery, which is set to premiere in January 2017.
