Today, December 23, marks a day that dares to stand toe-to-toe with all the other major days of celebration that close out each year: Festivus.
Introduced in the Seinfeld episode “The Strike,†the holiday was created by George Costanza’s father Frank as an alternative to Christmas and the commercialism that comes along with it. The idea came to Mr Costanza as he “rained blows†down upon another Christmas shopper’s head in a fight over a doll intended for George. Editor and author Daniel O’ Keefe first celebrated the holiday with his family in 1966 as a way to relieve family tension, and it was his son Dan who wrote the holiday into the Seinfeld canon.
Please join us today in the airing of grievances and the feats of strength, as we await a Festivus miracle by our tinsel-free pole. We would also like to announce at this time that we will be making a one-million-dollar donation to The Human Fund.
From our Bingeclock family to yours, have a safe and happy Festivus.
How long does it take to watch every episode of Seinfeld?
