David Simon, best known as the creator of The Wire, Generation Kill, and The Deuce, is adapting Philip Roth's 2004 novel The Plot Against America into a six-part miniseries.
In The Plot Against America, Roth depicts an alternative version of American history, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt losing the 1940 election to Charles Lindbergh, who in reality led the America First Committee, an organization that opposed US aid to Britain in its war with Germany and that was accused by some contemporaries of supporting the fascist movements that had swept through Europe in the 1930s.
HBO has picked up The Deuce, which premiered last year to critical acclaim, for a 2nd season, and they are also working with Simon on a project that he is co-producing with Carl Bernstein, the Washington Post reporter who became famous for his coverage of the Watergate scandal.
To date, eight Roth novels have been adapted for film: Portnoy's Complaint, The Human Stain, The Dying Animal, The Humbling, Indignation, The Ghost Writer, American Pastoral, and Goodbye, Columbus (in part).
